How the Future of the Amazon Went From Darker Than Ever to the Brightest It Has Been in Years

In recent decades, the deforestation of the Amazon has continued to jeopardize this precious ecosystem and natural resources. However, there is good news; compared to the past six years, 2023 maintained the lowest rates of overall Amazon deforestation.

The Amazon rainforest is and important and unique biodiversity hotspot; one that countless animals and plant species call home. Unfortunately, its integrity has been threatened in recent decades due to human activity. The central cause of harm to the Amazon is deforestation, mainly due to the removal of vast amounts of trees for lumber and human consumption. However, due to a variety of changes made in 2023, this past year has maintained the lowest rate of deforestation when compared to the past six. It is our hope that we can continue this trend throughout 2024 and allow portions of the Amazon to recover to their natural state.

One of the main causes for the rapid deforestation of the Amazon is the illegal harvesting of timber. In 2023, creates of this crime decreased significantly due to the Brazilian government increasing surveillance and deterring criminals. Early in his inaugeration, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvastated he would crack down on deforestation and the illegal activities it attracts. Since his new and focused environmental policies have taken effect, deforestation in the Amazon has decreased by 66% since the previous year.

Another large contributor to the deforestation of the Amazon, especially in recent years, are massive wildfires that ravage the forests. These fires are part of the vicious cycle of deforestation, partially caused by unregulated agricultural expansion into the Amazon, which leads to a higher chance of drought and fires. When such burning occurs, further vegetation is unintentionally removed causing deforestation to continue unchecked.

Similarly to their crack down on illegal logging, the Brazilian government is also using increased surveillance, satellite imagery, and more extensive records to keep track of who is allowed to operate on what land. This allows agencies to identify potential criminals and unregulated activity, reducing agricultural expansion and land degredation.

While the Amazon rainforest is at a critical point in its existence – and so are the species that call it home, these recent developments provide hope and direction for what the future could look like. Continued support of these government actions will encourage the Brazilian government to maintain their efforts in protecting the forest. While there is still more work to be done, and expanded support is needed to ensure deforestation rates continue to decline, the actions of the Brazilian citizens, their government, and activists, are improving the health of the Amazon rainforest.

The recent positive turn of events for this amazing ecosystem is not only good news for the people and animals that depend on the Amazon, it is good news for all of us! The rapid deforestation of the Amazon prior to 2023, was reaching irreparable level. However, with the right laws in place, in just one year the rates of deforestation decreased by two thirds.

What’s the lesson here? It is never too late to start doing the right thing. Positive actions can make big differences in short amounts of time. And finally, it is extremely important to never give up on protecting our natural resources, especially in the world of conservation.
