How Your Pet Can Benefit From Animal Enrichment

Animal enrichment is a critical part of caring for animals that helps to ensure they remain healthy; both mentally and physically. Enrichment is important not just for wild animals, but for our own pets as well.

Enrichment is critical in maintaining the mental and physical health of animals in captivity. As discussed in my previous blog post, enrichment consists of different activities to ensure animals remain active with both their minds and their bodies. This often involves problem solving with the promise of rewards and introduction of new scenarios or scenery to an animals environment. Ones that simulate what they might find in their natural environments and that encourage them to investigate and play. However, enrichment is not just for wild animals in human care. It is equally important that we provide our pets with enrichment activities to keep them happy and healthy.

So, what are we looking to accomplish when we discuss animal enrichment for pets? The goal is to provide them with activities that are new, interesting, and/or require some sort of investigation or effort for the animal to complete a task. A simple enrichment activity useful for most pets is playing games – such as tug of war, hide and seek, or fetch. Games are engaging for both brain and body and encourage pets to problem solve as while being physically active. Besides that, it provides you and your pet with further opportunities to bond!

For dogs, a form of enrichment that is both valuable and fun, is training them. Believe it or not, dogs actually love learning new things. Teaching a dog new tricks with the promise of a reward like a toy or a treat, is not only fun and exciting for them, but extremely important for their mental stimulation. Additionally, games like hide and seek can provide similar problem solving experiences while simultaneously allowing them to exert their natural inclination to investigate their environment using smells.

Another popular pet that can benefit from enrichment are cats. While felines are generally more independent animals, it is still equally important that cats also experience engaging activities. One such avenue for enrichment are perches or cat trees situated in areas where they can have a wide field of view, such as in the corner of a larger room or by a window. This provides cats with a comfortable area to hide away and observe, allowing them to analyze their environment, feel safe, pounce, and enjoy mental stimulation. Another option is games or puzzles they have to complete before being rewarded with their food. This provides an outlet for a cat’s natural instincts to chase or catch their food, since they usually don’t get such an experience in a domestic setting.

Enrichment for our furry friends doesn’t have to be expensive, time consuming, or very elaborate. That being said, the positive impact it can have on our pets is invaluable. It is important to remember our animals are living beings, and require some extra help to maintain mentally and physically healthy in our homes. Our pets are our family, and part of treating them as such is providing them with the care they need, not just in the form of food and shelter, but also in keeping their minds and bodies strong and happy.
