Behind the Scenes: Lessons Learned in Buddy’s Red List Rescue

Outside of saving a dog’s life, one of the greatest parts of carrying out Red List Rescues are the lessons learned along the way. Lessons in faith, in communication, in rescue politics, and in grace. Each and every advocacy mission requires new levels of endurance and creativity.

As I write this, the verse that comes to mind is: “Let us throw off every weight that hinders us and run with endurance the race marked out for us.” – Hebrews 12:1. Let me tell you, there are a lot of weights that I carry when deciding to start a Red List Rescue. It’s a heavy feeling to be sent pictures and the story of a dog whose life has a set number of days left. Knowing that although it is not soley my responsibility to ensure his wellness, if I choose to do nothing, there is a chance this innocent animal may never know the love and freedom all life on this planet deserves. There are also weights of knowing that my mind and focus will be preoccupied for the duration of the rescue until it is complete. That there will be periods or days when there seems to be no adopter or foster interest, and that there is always the chance the rescue won’t be successful. Not to mention, maintaining a clear head and calm heart so that accurate and kind communication can take place should someone reach out with interest – or when trying to relay important messages to rescue organizations so that they can approve an identified foster. The list goes on…

When I started Red List Rescues, I used to be overwhelmed by the pressure and the weight. Now, it hasn’t gotten easier, but I have become stronger and more faith-filled while managing the weights. Having been through 14 successful past rescues, God has revealed to me his goodness, his peace, and that he truly wants to do more through each rescue effort than I could ever imagine or ask for. Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” I have no doubt that God is working in these rescues – his presence is so strong in each of them.

What I never expected was how much he would teach me about himself and how he wants to love me through them. I would have never guessed that starting these rescues would actually make ME a stronger and calmer person in many other areas of my life. Truly, it’s like walking on water towards him because I can’t do this on my own and it is far to scary to attempt to do so. Jesus always shows up in such unexpected and miraculous ways and getting to work with him to save the lives of animals and unite them with loving families – whose lives the rescue pups then change – has been one of the greatest blessings of my life.

So, I have decided to start sharing little “behind the scenes” stories of rescues moving forward. Why? Because I think given how much many of you take the time to support, share, and help to advocate for the saving of red listed dogs with Frost Fund, you deserve the inside scoop! Plus, there is so much more to be told and greater lessons to learn than what could be posted on social media.
